The great beneficiary

Miracle or threat, China's trade growth and its impact on the world are now part of every economic conversation. (3) Evidence of this dramatic change is given by astonishing trade figures. From US$249.2 billion in 2000, at the eve of the WTO accession, Chinese merchandise exports have increased to $1,577.8 billion in 2010. (4) China is exporting to every single region of the world, with a spectacular merchandise trade growth with Latin America (from $5.7 billion in 2000 to $69.9 billion in 2010) and Africa (from $4.9 billion in 2000 to $58.1 billion in 2010). Although far less impressive, the China ascendancy in trade in commercial services is also perceptible. With 4.6 percent of the world trade in commercial services in 2010, China occupies the fourth global position, right after India and before Japan. While Chinese exports are skyrocketing, Chinese merchandises imports are also steadily increasing (from $7.2 billion in 2000 to $106.9 billion in 2010).

Russia's interest in Asia has been on the rise. Since the 2000s, under presidents Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev, the country has embraced an "Asian" or "Eastern" foreign policy focused on strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with East and Southeast Asia. Considering the shift of the global economic and strategic balance eastwards, a traditionally Europe-oriented Russia has begun to realize its Asian dimension and potential.

Depuis les années 1990, à l'instar d'autres pays et notamment de la Chine, la République socialiste du Viêt Nam déploie un éventail de politiques pour tirer profit de ses exilés ou enfants d'exilés. L'objectif du gouvernement est de mobiliser, au nom de l'Union nationale, les ressortissants vietnamiens de l'étranger estimés à environ quatre millions dans plus de cent pays à travers le monde. Pendant des années, la méfiance envers les Vietnamiens de l'étranger (Việt kiều) avait empêché toute évolution.

À l'occasion de la semaine de l'écologie, l'Alliance française en partenariat avec l'Institut Français de Pondichéry et Plume! vous propose un cycle de découverte et d'échange autour de la thématique de l'écologie, ou plutôt des écologies, celle des scientifiques, de la biodiversité aux écosystèmes, et celle au coeur des enjeux planétaires actuels.

Une exposition du 03 au 15 avril à la Maison Colombani "Monde vivant, monde rusé" vous fera redécouvrir les trésors d'adaptation d'un monde vivant en interaction permanente avec son environnement. L'ouverture de l'exposition se fera le mardi 03, à 18h00 en présence des chercheurs de l'Institut français de Pondichéry. Cette balade fera écho à trois soirées en compagnie de Cédric Gaucherel et Vincent Bonhomme, chercheurs à l'Institut Français. Le 3 et le 4, nous aborderons et débattrons des thématiques de biodiversité : son évolution et son fonctionnement. Le 5, c'est la projection de "Mia et le Migou" qui ouvrira un débat, toujours avec nos deux chercheurs, sur l'écologie aujourd'hui et ses enjeux pour la planète et nos sociétés.

On the eve of the war against the South Vietnamese regime in 1964, the communist party strove to carve out a new productivist and political elite from the towns and villages of the country. According to a categorization of patriotic exemplarity devised by Ho Chi Minh, "avant-garde workers," "exemplary soldiers" and "new heroes" would fill the ranks of a "new model society," one in which political virtue would serve as the principle to mobilize the masses.
